Category:Diminutive surnames
From Latvian Surname Project
This category contains surnames that are diminutives. Diminutive surnames are extremely popular in Latvia, often more popular than the non-diminutive. Officially, at the time that Latvians acquired surnames, they were not supposed to choose diminutive names (the officials considered them too "friendly" for formal purposes), but many people did anyways. While the most common endings for diminutive names are "-ītis" and "-iņš" (and their feminine forms "-īte" and "-iņa"), keep in mind that not all names with these endings are diminutives - for example, Āboliņš and Amoliņš are proper names in their own right.
