Not to be confused with Biržai district in northern Lithuania, which was also home to many Latvians, a number of whom emigrated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Birži parish is located in southern Latvia, south of the town of Jēkabpils. In the inter-war period, it was a part of Jēkabpils county.
